The Cardinals are doing everything they can to figure out a way to keep Albert, but also preparing for the likelihood that he will be too expensive to keep around. Signing Matt Holliday, re-signing Westbrook to add to an already top notch rotation, signing a veteran like Berkman, trading for Ryan Theriot, etc. All of these signings point to a “win-now” mentality. What is interesting to think about though is where Pujols could land if he chooses to test free agency. You never count teams like New York or Boston out, but they seem to be more of a long shot for Pujols’ services than they usually would be. The Yankees are already committed to Mark Teixeira at 1B. It’s possible they could go after Pujols and play one of them at DH, but not likely. The Red Sox just acquired Adrian Gonzalez and would like to keep him around if they can work out an extension. Chances are if they don’t feel like paying Gonzalez they won’t feel like paying Pujols even more. There are only a handful of teams in baseball that could afford to sign Pujols in the first place.
